Mexico - Activities

One of the other really cool things about our vacation was that they had daily and nightly activities.  Making it all the more like summer camp for the kids.  The kids had a ball playing water polo and both did quite well given they had never played nor even seen it played before.  Josie and the activities director took special care of Benjamin since he couldn't quite touch in the area of the pool they were playing.

On Valentine's Day they had a special mascot come and hand out lollipops to the kids.  The poor person inside the costume must have been SO hot!!
One day they had a piƱata for the kids to break out.

The kids had fun playing croquet, horse shoes and shuffle board too.

This guy, Manny, was so patient with the kids and because there normally less than 10 kids at any given activity and Benjamin was normally the youngest he got special attention.

They also had arts and crafts each day. Sometimes there was painting, sometimes there were things to make with beads and other times there was face painting... which seemed like a strange choice given that they jumped right into the pool minutes after getting their faces painted..

Benjamin choose spider man and the entire face was supposed to be painted white but mid way through I said that was enough...
We turned it into a kitty instead.
About mid week Josie realized that she could just go help herself to any of the food and drinks available at the bar.  After that she was rarely seen without a strawberry smoothie  (margarita) or ice cream cone in her hand.
Carnival games were also a big hit

They had a  playground jungle gym on right above the beach that also got a fair amount of use by the kids throughout the week.

The meals were often an activity as well.  Each night they had a theme.  The Mexican night was the best by far.
They also had nightly entertainment.  We didn't go every night but when we did it was fun.

Josie loved having a little sister for the week.

The four of us waiting for the show to start.
One night they had an auction where they used the fake money they had won during carnival games that afternoon.  Benjamin did surprisingly well in the games and was able to bid on and win this hat.  Big sister Josie did a great job helping him accept his prize and help him down off the stage.
Benjamin and his hat that he later traded with Josie for a crab hat that she won doing the limbo.
Marty reading a German book to Sabina.  Caetano and Sabina both speak Spanish and Japanese fluently.  They found this German book and figured Marty could read it... which he did.  Sabina loved it.

Here is Josie and her friend, Sylvi during the boogie board races.

The towel art on the bed each day was also something the kids looked forward to each day.  We think this was a dinosaur.
The weeks leading up to Mexico Josie really wanted to learn how to play chess because she saw the picture of this huge chess set that was at our hotel.  I've got to hand it to her.  She really did learn how to play and then was able to teach Caetano.

Of course all that activity demands a drink to cool you down and refresh you.
For the first time in years the kids took a two hour nap in the lounge chairs nearly every day!!  Amazing.  Marty and I were able to just sit and read books while they slept.  I finished an entire book - start to finish in the 8 days!
Benjamin often preferred to be covered up completely in the towels and then would fall asleep in his little cocoon or fall asleep laying on my stomach.  Either way, once he was asleep it was for a solid 2 hours.

Josie also had several two hour snoozers.

Two Hours - The Beach and Bucerias

Since our friends Siri and family were there with us we decided to do a swap.  For two hours one afternoon Siri and Hideki took 2 hours to walk along the beach and hang out while Marty and I watched all 4 kids.  The next day Marty and I took a wonderful 2 hour walk up the flat and perfect for walking beach to the next town, named Bucerias.  It was so nice to have some time together, get a bit of exercise and reminisce about our meeting near this very beach 10 years ago.

Mexico - The Beach

Oh, where to start??  We had an incredibly fun and relaxing 8 days in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in mid February.  It was our first all inclusive family vacation and I fear it may have wrecked us for any other non-all inclusive vacations to come.  I had chosen the resort because it was one of the few hotels that is on a swimmable beach.  So many resort areas in Mexico have a beautiful beach and ocean but because of the undertow and strong waves you are not able to swim in it.  The hotel was also one of the most inexpensive ones yet still got pretty good reviews (believe me, I read ALL of them!) and lastly because it seemed to be the most "Mexican" of them all.  In fact one of the biggest complaints in the reviews was that it catered to a mostly Mexican clientele.  Funny that was a complaint because, uh, excuse me... you are IN Mexico?!?  Anyway, the fact that there would be more Mexicans than Americans really sold it for me.  If we had wanted to go to San Diego, we would have gone to San Diego.
The beach did not disappoint.  It was just steps away from the swimming pool which was just steps away from our room.... did I mention it was all very relaxing?  The hotel had a very large roped off area in the water so it felt safe to swim out pretty far and still feel a bit protected.   The hotel had boogie boards that we could just use for an hour or two and then bring back when we were finished.  (all part of the all inclusive price) Nearly every day we would spend at least an hour boogie boarding.  The kids got very brave and pretty good.  For Benjamin, it was his first time in warm ocean water (other than in Hawaii when he was only a few months old but of course he doesn't remember this).  For our little surfer dude, it was just perfect!!
Before I move on to more beach stuff I have to say that the travel portion was better than ever.  These kids are amazing travelers!!  We had to leave our house at 5AM so we had to wake the kids up extra early.  I figured they would be cranky but they weren't.  For the first time I actually read and relaxed nearly the entire flight.  Partly due to the fact that they each had a device, Marty took the seat between the kids on the second leg from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta but mostly it was because the kids are just great travelers.  After 8 hours of  driving, flying, waiting, flying, walking, driving, the first time they complained at all was in the taxi when we were just minutes away from our hotel.   I guess after several trips to Europe, traveling anywhere else is simple.

Back to the beach.... hours and hours of wave jumping, boogie boarding and sand digging and castle building.

And lots of sand in the swim trunks...
It was a bit like summer camp for Josie.  We planned to met up with my good friend, Siri, and her family.  She has an 11 year old son and a 3 year old daughter.  It was so fun to have friends there with us.  In addition, Josie met several fun friends that she played with.  This particular family had 4 kids very close in age (ages 9-5) and she had a ball with the three sisters (all in matching striped swim suits) Benjamin, of course, liked all the girls too!

What would a Mexican beach be without the fruit vendors.

 More and more boogie boarding....

I even had a blast boogie boarding.  SO much fun!!

Marty riding the wave all the way in.

The girls riding a wave all the way in.
Josie did awesome and was really brave even after several major spills.
Benjamin crashing but still giving it a thumbs up!
Shaking camera work with Benjamin on my back but still hear us yelling "Here comes a biggie!" which was what the kids yelled every time a big wave came.
Josie had a great time jumping waves with her new friend, Slyvie.

The sunsets each night were truly spectacular.

One night they had a BBQ a few feet from the beach.
The beach is right over his shoulder.

Oh, how I miss this beautiful, warm and sandy beach!!
