New Year's Eve in Berlin

I had been reading in various places that Berliners get a bit crazy on New Year's Eve.  I told Marty we should go to dinner early or just stay in.  I heard that some subway or bus stations are inaccessible because people are lighting off fireworks in or near the stations.  I also read that fireworks here are very inexpensive and ones that we would consider illegal are perfectly widely accessible, inexpensive and legal.  The trifecta.
We aren't ones to particularly even like fireworks in Seattle on any given 4th of July or New Year's Eve.  I feel so badly for the pets that get traumatized not to mention anyone who has been in combat, all the military veterans who most certainly must have PTSD at the sound. But we figured, this is Germany.  They are sensible in every sense of the word.  They aren't going to just lose it on NYE's.  Well, we could not have been more wrong.
We have NEVER ever ever seen or heard anything like we heard at midnight on NYE.  We kept hearing fireworks working themselves up from about 5PM on but we both figured the Germans would burn themselves out or burn themselves up and be done with it.  We all went to bed around 9PM, tired from all of our packing and moving and just returning from Spain.  Just before midnight we heard a sound I hope to never hear again.  As far as you could hear it was rumbling much like what I imagine a war must sound like.  It was close by explosions but then honestly thousands of explosions for miles and miles.  It was NUTS.  And the crazier part was that it continued at this level for more than 40 minutes.  It was like the biggest finale from a professional fireworks show that honestly lasted for more than 40 minutes.  It felt like the Germans who are normally so conservative and reserved just needed to REALLY let loose one day a year.  Crazy!!
I hope this video is accessible.  Marty took this video from our bedroom window.  He could have pointed the camera in any direction and it would have been the same scene.  And again 40+ minutes at this level of intensity.

And here is his Facebook post because he is much more funny than I am:
What the HOLY HELL!!??!! It's our first New Years in Berlin and we have NEVER, and I mean NEVER EVER EVER experienced anything like this. We were warned, "Berliners get a little crazy on NYE." But we thought, how bad could it get? HOLY S#%T!!!! We live on the edge of town and the whole freaking city is one exploding, massive, hillbilly-shaming fireball. Everyone is firing off rockets, cannons, artillery ... and it won't stop. Forty minutes in and it still sounds like the video we shot below from our bedroom window. YES, that's just outside our bedroom!!! Imagine the most intense professional fireworks display you've ever scene. Now imagine every Cletus von Nutshack firing off 10x that display from their apartment window!! That's what this is. And again, it won't stop. But I'm proud to say our kids are 100% Riemer and are sleeping thru the whole thing. Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!
The next few days we did see quite a bit of firework shrapnel on the streets which was also a bit shocking since they are such rule followers.
