Friends
Josie has made a lot of new friends this year at kindergarten but perhaps her very best new friend is Elliott. They are so sweet together and really get along well and have a lot of fun. On most Mondays Elliott rides the bus home with Josie and then they have some time to play together after school until dinner time.
Benjamin really likes when Elliott comes over too. In fact, he calls all of Josie's friends Elliott now. And if I tell him that she is coming over, he replies "I love Elliott!" Ha! I'm sure it won't be the first time he has a crush on one of Josie's friends.
Here they are at the bus stop and walking home together. Friend are the best!!
Adios KMTT!

At the end of December Marty signed off the radio at KMTT after 15 years there and Jodi organized a going away party for him at a local bar. His leaving was covered in our local paper.
It was a long time coming and was such a good decision for him to call it quits there. His first 10 or so years there were probably some of the best he spent in radio and he had loved it there. The last 5 were very, very rough and rocky which included being fired and rehired. He as many other things keeping him busy these days and some are even paying jobs :)
One of his latest accomplishments has been a documentary film that he and his good friend Michael made based on Marty's high school documentary "The Digital Blackout" and Michael's article "Sleeping with Siri" Here is the trailer for the film.

The film has been accepted into several film festivals across the country including: Palm Springs, AZ, Palm Beach, FL, New Orleans, LA, Seattle and they are waiting to hear back from 14 other film festivals. Their work may even be featured on an upcoming Katie Couric show in the spring.... stay tuned.

Sleep

He was a pretty typical baby up until he was 3 months old at which point he fought sleep with everything in his being. His eyes would be so heavy with sleep but the minute they closed he would jerk them back open and look at me like, "how could you let me fall asleep like that!!" For the rest of his first year he took three 20 minute naps per day and woke every 2 hours at night. Needless to say we were both pretty tired. At around 4 or 5 months I brought him into bed with us because getting out of bed and going downstairs, calming him down and getting him back to sleep 4+ times a night just got to be too much. It was a move about of pure survival. I know many people who sit very strongly and comfortably in the "cry it out" camp and thought I was crazy for not letting him just get over it. I wasn't really against the cry it out method but I wasn't necessarily for it either. I do have to say that every child is different and I have to believe that even those that align with that method would not have let this kid cry it out. His cries were not frustrated or sad or whiny, they were downright terrified. It was heartbreaking. After his seizure episode I was even less likely to be far from him during sleep in case he had a seizure at night. Around 2 years old he starting having night terrors. He always had small ones, as he transitioned from one sleep cycle to another but while we were in Europe last year, they began in full force. Which was really nice while staying in hotels rooms or with family - NOT!!! He would wake up several times a night screaming (as if his hand was on a hot burner) for about 20 minutes at a time. He looked awake but was out of it as if sleep walking. Out of our 16 night trip, probably 10 of those nights he had a night terror. When we returned he seemed even more afraid to fall asleep. Who could blame him? I was afraid too. So, he began refusing naps but was so incredibly tired and everything I read was that night terrors were exacerbated by lack of sleep...go figure! The only way he would nap and thus avoid a night terror was either in the stroller (see photos) - when the weather got cold we bundled him up - or in the car. He would end up sleeping for nearly 2 hours (30 minutes in stroller or car and 1.5 after being transferred to a bed.) But because I didn't want to drive or walk for a long time I'd wait until later in the afternoon to start the nap which meant he was waking at 4 and then not falling asleep until 9:30 or 10.
Around the holidays I couldn't always squeeze a nap in our busy days. I noticed that he wasn't having night terrors. So we took out naps entirely. With a HUGE sigh of relief we are all getting much more sleep these days. He falls asleep within a few minutes of finishing books and sleeps much more soundly at night. I know this because he still sleeps right next to me :) He still fights sleep and literally falls asleep with his eyes open. It is a strange thing to witness. He is what I like to call "cling wrap" and cuddles up close. Co-sleeping was never our intention and without having a child like Benjamin I wouldn't have fully understood its purpose. It has been a LOOONNG road but am thankful to be in a new, better place. We are hoping for his upcoming third birthday to get him a bed (I gave away his crib/toddler bed about 9 months ago because it was just taking up space. He hadn't slept in it in so long it seemed silly to keep it.) He says he wants rockets ships on his new bed and glow in the dark stars on the ceiling...whatever you want, little buddy, whatever you want.

Spring Forward

Our yard looks a bit green with only the greens of the daffodils and the sparse baby daffodils above them.It looks like there might be a large daffodil or two that she missed but she was pretty thorough. I'm hoping to enjoy the tulips from the ground in which they are planted and not the tiny buds brought in the house a couple weeks early. The weather is beginning to change here and is its typical crazy Seattle spring type weather most days. This Saturday we officially "spring ahead" by setting our clocks ahead. Can't believe winter is almost over. Happy Spring everyone :)

Los Angeles
A couple weeks before Christmas, Marty was scheduled to do some video work at a hotel in the Los Angeles area. Although this wouldn't be a normal vacation destination for us we decided to take advantage of the free hotel room and make a mini vacation out of it.
The kids and I flew down to meet him. I was a bit nervous traveling alone with the two kids but I shouldn't have worried. They are seasoned travelers and Josie is ever the good, big sister.
The hotel was right on the water and the minute we got there we opened
the windows to let the fresh, salt water air blow through our hair. Not
only was it a very nice hotel but once they found out that we were
joining Marty they gave us an additional adjoining room. This was such a
luxury!
There was a boardwalk and a sleepy, little, old-school arcade within walking distance of our hotel. We spent a lot of time there especially since it was a bit cloudy and they were running a "rainy day special" nearly every day we were there. All rides and games were 25 cents. We discussed the idea of renting a car while we were there and driving to Disneyland. But, honestly, they were just as happy with the arcade and our daily trips to the beach and the playground. Once Marty and I made up our minds for sure that we didn't really want to go to Disneyland we asked the kids if they would rather go or have a half roll of quarters ($5) to spend at the arcade. They both said they wanted the quarters and we didn't hear another word about Disneyland.
Our daily walks to the beach and the playground were also a big hit. We also reconnected with a friend from our PEPS group who now lives just 15 minutes away from where we were staying so we spent one morning at her house with her family and some neighborhood friends of theirs. We were just there for 5 days but since we didn't have anything planned it seemed much longer and was actually quite relaxing. Below is a pretty good representation of our days. Beach, playground, beach, playground, beach, playground... you get the idea.

This was a post it note on the mirror one day. I'm not sure I agree 100% but I like the sentiment.

Baking and Decorating

To the left, Josie is posing (crazily) next to an ornament that Grandma made probably 35 years ago. I have mostly Grandma hand me down ornaments on our tree along with the yearly birthday ornament gift that she always bought all 4 of us November birthday kids. Our tree would be pretty bare without you, Grandma. Thank you for helping us decorate our tree each year :)
Cookie making sometimes keep their attention long enough for one batch to make it out of the oven. Normally, just long enough for something good, like M&M's to make it into the dough and then they just want to eat it. Tis the Season, I suppose.
